Otoplasty in Turkey

Otoplasty, or also known as ear correction surgery, is a medical procedure to correct shape of ears and re-design their appearance. It is an aesthetic procedure to address a person’s dissatisfaction with the look of his or her ears. The appearance of ears might be discomforting for person if they stick from head. Another cause of disturbance might be the defects on ears that occurred at birth or developed as a result of injury.

Otoplasty Surgery

Lop-Ear otoplasty is the second method to treat particular type of ear deformity in which the top of the ear leans forward. These deformities can be mild or severe malformations. The top of the ear that bends forward is corrected with this technique.

One-Ear otoplasty is the last method, which is performed to correct deformities on ear of the patient. The goal of this technique is similar to other method as it aims at correcting defects and enhancing the appearance. The surgeon changes the outer ear to achieve the desired natural look.

Preparation for Surgery

If a patient decided to have ear correction surgery, he or she has to take steps indicated below and exercise cautions indicated as follows:

· Having requisite tests before medical examination

· Quitting smoking

· Abandoning use of anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin and herbal supplements

Possible Risks of Ear Correction Surgery

Otoplasty, like many other surgeries, has potential risks such as bleeding, infection and adverse reaction to sedation. There are also other risks that might be association with ear correction surgery:

· Scarring: The scars left from the surgery might last lifetime, but they will remain hidden behind ear or within creases of ears

· Asymmetry in ear positioning: The healing process might not progress as desired due to changes in recovery phase. The surgery could not achieve ideal results.

· Changes in skin sensation: The changing of ears’ position during surgery might affect skin sensation temporarily. The skin sensation will go away in almost all cases.

Post-Surgery Experience

After ear surgery, ears will be wrapped in bandages for support and protection. An itching feeling might create disturbance to you. Stick to medication prescribed by doctor. If pain medication causes unforeseen disturbance, consult your doctor immediately. Ask your doctor about performing daily activities such as showering or physical exercise.

In order to avoid pressure on your eyes, do not sleep on your side. Furthermore, incisions should not be rubbed and excessive force should not be applied onto them. Bandages will be removed a few days after the surgery by doctor. You will come across with swollen and red ears most probably. Recovery after Surgery

There might be minor swelling and discomfort in and around ear after surgery. Patient should wear protection and cover during recovery process. Most of the patients will be instructed to wear compression garments. Doctor will also prescribe certain medications possibly including antibiotics. Patient should adhere to following the medication routine.

A supportive headband is advised to be worn in order to cover ears for the first couple of days after the surgery. The swelling and discomfort that arose immediately after the surgery will go away quickly. Patient will be alleviated from his complaints within few days after surgery.

Around day 10 milestone, patient can fully return to normal life including going to work. This period depends on the type of work and degree of swelling as well. A headband will be advised to be worn at night for six weeks after the surgery.

After three months, the ears will attain their final natural appearance. Patient should consult with doctor at this point of time to get an overview of his results. It may take longer for some patient to get fully recovered. In order to fully see the ultimate results of surgery, one-year milestone should be passed. The healing process depends on several factors including health, age and other physiological factors.

Tips for Post Surgery Care

The points to follow after surgery are mentioned below:

· Patient should maintain a straight posture as much as possible to ensure proper blood flow.

· When drying hair, patient should avoid using high heat or heated styling equipment

· Medications should be taken as prescribed by doctor. It might be useful to set reminders for medications

· A nutrient rich diet will help patient to recover rapidly from ear surgery
